The 1st eighteen were tunnellers from Manchester who operated 110 years ago. They could tunnel 26 feet a day to their adversaries' 7.

They knew the terrain - blue clay - from their home city. The technique they had mastered, 'claykicking' was unglamorous but highly effective.
